Listen for any sounds such as knocks coming from the vehicle. Also, take the time to look at the emissions standards sticker on the engine to make certain the truck meets current regulations. Taking your mechanic along for a test drive is also an excellent idea. You must know how the truck handles on the road. 

You can further protect yourself by going to a reputable dealer to buy your used vehicle. You are more likely to find quality trucks, and you will have the backing of a good company if something goes wrong. Most dealerships will offer at least a limited warranty on their used vehicles, so you will enjoy some protection from unexpected problems.
