Keeping Your Vehicle Running Smoothly

Isaiah Chambers

If you own a vehicle, you will want to do checks to some of the main mechanical parts to make sure they are running in the proper manner. There are several things you can do to your vehicle on a regular basis to maintain it, alleviating the need for costly repair. Here are some of the things you should routinely check within your vehicle to keep it running properly.

Engine Oil

You should make a point to check on your engine oil level every few weeks to keep it at the proper level in your reservoir. If you notice that you are putting an excessive amount of oil in your vehicle, you will want to have it looked at by your automobile mechanic to make sure there is not a leak somewhere in the system.

Oil should be changed when its appearance is dark and the consistency is clumpy. Your vehicle manual will tell you what the recommended frequency for oil changing would be for your particular model.

Belts

Your vehicle consists of several belts that run under the hood, keeping the mechanical portions of your vehicle running smoothly. Do a routine check of the belts when your vehicle is not being used. Check for areas that are cracked or fraying. These should be replaced to continue having your vehicle run in a favorable manner.

Tire Checks

You will want to take a look at your tires every few weeks to make sure they are filled with the appropriate air pressure. If your tires are under-inflated, they may cause your vehicle to pull to the side of the road when you drive it. If they have too much air inside, they may pop or explode when you drive your vehicle. Take a look in your vehicle manual or in some instances on the tire itself, to find out what the recommended air pressure is for your tires and add or remove air, if necessary.

Braking System

You do not want your brakes to wear to the point that they will not work when they are needed. If you hear any squealing sounds coming from your vehicle when you stop, you may need to replace the brake pads. Doing this quickly may save you from needing to buy new brakes. You should check your brake fluid level to make sure there are no leaks occurring within your braking system.

Battery

Your battery gives your vehicle the power it needs to start. To keep your battery in good starting shape, routinely clean the terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water. Use a toothbrush to apply and rinse off with water when completed. Do this after you have disconnected the battery, to avoid injury.
