You're driving down the freeway in your car. Everything is going smoothly. All of a sudden, a large toy comes flying past your head and strikes the windshield. After you regain your composure, you realize that the toy has cracked your windshield. This step-by-step guide will help you get through the next few minutes.

Pull To The Side Of The Road

Don't try to continue driving, especially if there is significant damage to your windshield. Pull to the side of the road as soon as it's safe to do so. If the damage has impaired your ability to see out of your windshield, turn your hazard lights on immediately, and then move to the side of the road. Once you're off the road, you'll be able to see exactly how severe the damage is.

Assess The Damage

If the damage to your windshield is minor, such as just a small crack or chip, you should be able to drive home. However, if the damage is significant, such as a crack that runs from side to side, or a chip that has created a hole straight through the windshield, you shouldn't try to drive home. Large cracks and chips can expand due to the force of the wind on your windshield. If that happens, you could end up with your windshield shattering while you're driving.

Call For Roadside Assistance If Needed

If you're unable to drive your car due to the damage, you should call for roadside assistance as soon as possible. They will be able to tow your car to a repair shop so you can have your windshield repaired or replaced.

Keep a small tube of silicon glue in your car. For small chips and cracks, simply place a small amount of glue on your finger and rub it onto the damaged area.
